The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac) has granted a request by Defy Appliances to act against the alleged dumping of fully automatic top load machines imported from China and Thailand.

The machines, which have a dry linen capacity exceeding 10 kg but less than 17 kg, are a popular household electrical appliance that is used to wash laundry.

The commission has recommended to the South African Revenue Service that it impose provincial measures on imports of these machines while a final determination is being made by Itac.

The tariffs will be set at 9.39%, 8%, 13.42% and 67.11% on imports of the subject product for a period of six months, effective July 18.

In its preliminary investigation, Itac confirmed that the washing machines are being dumped from China and Thailand into the Southern African Customs Union market, which is leading to material injury and threat of material injury.
